Tjurkö Stonemasonry

Tjurkö Stonemasonry - Wherever you walk on cobblestone in the world, chances are it will come from Tjurkö.

At the turn of the century, the stonemasonry was one of the country's largest workplaces with 2,000 employees and the large quarries still bear witness to the hard craftsmanship. The memory of the stone industry is preserved here on Tjurkö and it was here that the business was carried out on a large scale.

A marked cultural trail of about 1.5 km now runs through the area at Herrgårdsviken, passing several facilities and memorials. It was at Herrgårdsviken that the stonemasonry community grew up with barracks, offices, a forge, a trading post, etc.

The church on the island was built by prisoners who were ordered to the stonemasonry at the end of the 19th century. According to legend, one of the prisoners, Abel Andersson, can be seen on the altarpiece. He painted himself there in chains among Jesus' companions.

The archipelago traffic regularly docks at Herrgårdsviken from Fisketorget in central Karlskrona.

NOTE! The trail is not accessible for the disabled.
